Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Safety First
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and steel-toed boots for foot protection.
- Ensure the area is clear of bystanders or obstacles.
2. Secure the AB640 to a Tractor
- Attach the AB640:
- Use a hammer strap to securely attach the AB640 to a properly sized tractor. This ensures stability during installation.
- Stabilize the Tractor:
- Place the tractor in park, turn off the engine, and double-check the connection.
Caution: Failing to secure the machine may result in tipping, leading to serious injury or damage.
3. Position the Machine on Solid, Level Ground
- Select a solid, level surface to perform the installation. Uneven ground can compromise stability.
Note: If the ground is soft or uneven, relocate the machine before proceeding.
4. Use Two Forklifts for Lifting
- Forklift Requirements:
- Both forklifts must have a minimum capacity of 8,000 pounds at three feet out on the forks.
- Position one forklift on each side of the axle.
- Lift the Rear Axle:
- Narrow the forks and lift from underneath the axle near the steel shipping wheels.
- Alternatively, wrap tow straps around the spindle and lift using the straps.
- Set the Blocks:
- Slide sturdy blocks or wood cribbing under the rear wheels.
- Lower the wheels onto the blocks gently to stabilize the machine.
Note: Under ideal conditions, blocks may not be necessary.
5. Lift the Front Axle and Install Lockout Pins
- Lift the Front Axle:
- Position the forklifts evenly on both sides of the axle closest to the shipping wheel you would like to raise or by wrapping a tow strap around the spindle and lifting with the forks through the tow straps.
- Lift until the front axle reaches its maximum height.
- Insert Lockout Pins:
- Use axle lockout pins on each side of the machine.
- Secure the pins with the ring lock pins.
- Lower the Axle Gently:
- With the pins securely in place, slowly lower the axle onto the lockout pins.
6. Remove the Shipping Wheels
- Remove the Lug Nuts: Use 1-1/8” Socket
- Use a lug wrench or impact wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts on each shipping wheel.
- Remove the Wheels:
- Completely remove the lug nuts and slide the shipping wheels off the axle.
- Place the wheels in a safe storage area.
7. Mount the Tires
- Install the Tire:
- Carefully lift the tire and fit it onto the hub use a forklift if needed.
- Push the tire until it is flush with the wheel hub.
- Tighten the Lug Nuts:
- Use a lug wrench or impact wrench to hand-tighten the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque. Torque Tires to 300 ft-lbs use toque wrench with 1 1/8” socket and extension.
- Recheck torque after 10 km or 6 miles and again after 50 km or 30 miles.
- Other Set of Wheels
- Once the front tires have been installed you can lift the tires slightly to remove the lockout pins then you can repeat the steps again for the other set of wheels.
Tips and Troubleshooting
- If the machine shifts during lifting. Verify forklift alignment and ensure blocks are securely in place.
- Uneven tightening of lug nuts. Re-tighten the nuts using a star pattern with a torque wrench.
