Proper lubrication is key to maintaining the efficiency and longevity of your Valmar AB640 pull-type air boom. In these instructions, we will provide a detailed overview of the lubrication schedule to keep your machine running smoothly, minimize downtime, and extend the life of critical wear points.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Pre-Greasing Preparations
Before you begin the greasing process, it’s important to follow these preparatory steps:
- Step 1: Park the machine on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
- Step 2: Clean all grease fittings to remove dirt and debris, ensuring no contaminants enter the bearings.
- Step 3: Check the operation manual for the recommended grease type and ensure it’s on hand.
Note: Salford greases with NLGI #2 which is a calcium sulfonate-based grease. Check compatibility when using any other type of grease.
2. Lubrication Process
Follow these steps to lubricate your AB640 effectively:
- Access Grease Fittings: Locate the grease fittings for the bearings and pivot points. These can be found in five locations:
- Front grease bank: Located on the front driver’s side of the applicator with four grease zirks for the front tensioner bearings.

- Rear grease banks: Located at the back of the machine underneath the air box. There is both a left- and right-hand grease bank which will lubricate the rear bearings, boom pivots and boom struts.

- Walking beam undercarriage: 4 grease zirks located underneath the machine on the pivot points for the machine’s undercarriage.
- Booms: There are several grease zirks across both the left- and right-hand booms. This includes the boom pivots at the base of the booms, the mid-boom fold and the breakaway boom tip.

- Articulating hitch (if equipped): Located directly on the hitch of the machine.
- Apply Grease: Using a grease gun, follow the service intervals shown on the decals near the grease zerks or in the operator’s manual (usually every 40 hours).
Grease banks need a set number of pumps—check the decals and do not over-grease.
For the undercarriage, booms, and hitch, add grease until old grease comes out.
- Check for Over-Greasing: Wipe away any excess grease to prevent dirt accumulation, which can lead to premature wear.
4. Post-Lubrication Check
After completing the lubrication process:
- Inspect: Ensure all fittings are secure and that grease has been applied evenly.
- Test Run: Operate the machine briefly to allow the grease to distribute evenly across the components.
- Re-apply as Needed: Some components may require more frequent lubrication, especially during peak operating seasons. Refer to the machine’s operation manual for the correct lubrication intervals.
Tips and Troubleshooting
- Lubricate the machine at the end of the season to avoid buildup of moisture during storage. Failing to do so may cause premature bearing failure.
- Keep a log of lubrication schedules to ensure consistency and prevent missed maintenance.
- If you notice increased friction or unusual noises, check the lubrication points immediately. It may be a sign of insufficient lubrication or contaminated grease.
Maintaining a consistent lubrication schedule for your Valmar AB640 is essential for optimal machine performance and longevity. By following these steps, you can reduce downtime, extend the life of your machine, and ensure smooth operations throughout the season.
